Commercial Appeal of Memphis on Sunday /clipping/

Big Star planning to write new song for tribute album, by Jody Callahan (reprinted without permission)

For the first time in two decades, there will be new music from Big Star. The legendary Memphis band, which has reunited for several concerts in the past few years, will write and record a new song for this fall’s tribute record.
I had a strong desire to do a new Big Star song,” said drummer Jody Stephens, who joins original band member Alex Chilton in the reunited group. To make up for the absence of original members Chris Bell and Andy Hummel, Stephens and Chilton are joined by Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer of the Posies. It’s interesting when you go to write a song like that. Alex has a solo career now, and that’s defined by a particular style of music that differs from what Big Star was doing. It could be that Alex was waiting for the right moment to write this song, Stephens added.
Also, Stephens said the roster for the tribute album is nearly complete. According to Stephens, the unnamed record will have at least 11 songs, including the new Big Star song (Hot Thing).

The Beginning … 1996…
Confirmed acts and songs are:
Gin Blossoms Back of a Car
Matthew Sweet with Jody Stephens on drums & R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills The Ballad of El Goodo
The Posies What’s Going Ahn
Juliana Hatfield Don’t Lie To Me
Teenage Fanclub Jesus Christ
The Idle Wilds You Get What You Deserve
Sister Hazel September Gurls
Kelly Willis When My Baby’s Beside Me
Whiskeytown Give Me Another Chance
Wilco Thirteen
Son Volt Holocaust
Afghan Whigs Nighttime

The End ? … 2002. …
It’s almost certain that we’ll never see Big Star, Small World – A Tribute To Big Star album. Almost 6 years after the first press info about this project, nobody can tell anything specific about some future release date or final tracklisting. Over the years, many of the planned songs resurfaced on singles, compilations or various Internet sources (napster/audiogalaxy…). This is my small contribution to one of the biggest groups ever. I couldn’t do this without a few Big Star Internet resources, which you can find listed below. Please, visit them – you’ll find something helpful there, I’m sure.

An Alex Chilton song that he recorded in 1974. for Big Star’s Sister Lovers album. To some it may seem like images of bleak isolation, but to me it’s always sounded like a Sunday afternoon song, more a product of being at a loose end than being in despair. Paul Ricketts

The Psychedelic Furs “Love My Way” (by Ashton/R. Butler/T. Butler/Ely)

Forever Now
(1982. Columbia)

At once a celebration of an era, a sound and a band, Love My Way is one of the slyest and best singles from the early eighties, a deserved cult hit in the States well-remembered in modern-rock circles to the present. While the Psychedelic Furs’ usual sound was rough postpunk sonics and dreaminess, a spiked brew not too far off from where Echo and the Bunnymen were living, when Todd Rundgren worked with the band on its Forever Now album things shifted just enough to let this great number emerge. Featuring one of the last performances from original drummer Vince Ely before his departure, it’s great for the beat alone, big and crisp without losing the groove, right down to some smart, quick fills here and there and a further punch as the song concludes. Tim Butler’s bass takes more prominence over John Ashton’s stripped-down semi-surf guitar line, while the various keyboard lines take the melody and lead it throughout, a synth-rocker well worthy of the name. Richard Butler’s amused melancholy suits the smooth feeling – call it the spirit of Roxy Music on Love is the Drug updated a few years. Flo and Eddie’s backing harmonies add the right high-pitched soothe on the choruses and especially in a brilliant performance at the end.

John Martyn “I Don’t Wanna Know” (Martyn)

Solid Air
(1973. Island)

Don’t Wanna Know was originally recorded for 1973. album Solid Air. Much denser than before, Solid Airwas to reveal a new twist in Martyn’s musical style. Slurring his words even more, songs like the title cut fairly ooze from the shadows, and the jazzy inclinations keep the listener spellbound. A cover of Skip James’ I’d Rather Be the Devil found Martyn using an Echoplex delay effect, which gave his guitar work an otherworldly feel. May You Never is a great folk tale familiar to those who own Eric Clapton’s Slowhand – herein lies the original from the writer himself. Excellent!Dr. John’s version – produced by John Leckie and featuring Paul Weller on guitar and backup vocals. This John Martyn tune benefits greatly from the Dr. John’s gruff voice, which effectively undercuts the song’s blissful chorus…

Beth Orthon’s first musical project – a one off single, a cover version of John Martyn’s I Don’t Wanna Know About Evil recorded with William Orbit under the name of Spill.

The Vince Guaraldi Trio “Christmas Time Is Here”
One of the most interesting songs in both the movie and soundtrack (The Royal Tennenbaums) is Christmas Time is Here, by the Vince Guaraldi Trio, and of the Peanuts Christmas special fame. The song is so iconic of the Peanuts Christmas that you would think it wouldn’t work in the film, but it does, as well as fitting in beautifully on the soundtrack.
Every year around Christmastime, a local bar/dive called Springwater hosts a holiday celebration featuring a full slate of performers who appear there regularly during the year. The place is strewn with tinsel, someone usually sneaks in a bottle of whiskey, and it all feels nice and cozy in a way that it never does any other time of year. We used to play every year, and one of the last times we did it, we worked up this song, from the Peanuts Christmas specialWe recorded a version a couple years ago at The Castle recording studio, a cheesy replica of – you guessed it – a castle.
We hope you enjoy this warm holiday greeting.
Jonathan Marx
The lovely Vince Guaraldi perennial from A Charlie Brown Christmas gets an especially wistful makeover. Colvin’s delicate vocal makes the song seem more like a longing for Christmas past than a celebration of Christmas present, which makes the song even more evocative than it already was. Quite beautiful.
